Pterocarpus soyauxii

Padauk is heavy and strong with exceptional stability. It’s a popular hardwood among hobbyist woodworkers because of its unique color and working properties.

The predominant variety of trade is African Padauk. It has a very unique reddish orange coloration, and the wood is sometimes referred to by the name Vermillion. This dramatic color is darkens to a deep reddish brown color.  UV-inhibiting finishes may prolong, but not prevent the gradual color-shift of this brightly colored wood. The Asian varieties are more color stable.

Most species of Pterocarpus yield valuable timber traded as padauk; Southeast Asian varieties are sometimes marketed as narra. The burls are popular amongst wood lovers, and are marketed as Amboyna.
